I read the reviews on this camera before buying it and decided that durability and ease of use were more important than picture quality – not least because it was to be a present for my 4yr old, but his 2yr old little brother was bound to use it, so it had to be tough enough to cope with a toddler. We opened and experimented with it before giving it to our son, so we knew how to get decent images (Hold it still, make sure there’s plenty of light – natural if possible – and don’t get too close), and could coach him.

My son is utterly delighted with it. Both boys have taken decent pictures with it, and my 4yr old was familiar with the main functions within minutes. he can snap away with it and has produced a lovely record of his typical day, and what interests him. He’s never had a computer console, so he’s just as pleased with the (very basic) games as with the camera.

It is only really camera phone quality, and you get the best results with natural light, but I remember my first camera being much more fiddly to use and giving poorer results. My son is more interested in taking photos and knowing he has them than actually reviewing them so he has yet to notice that I delete the less successful ones!

My only gripe is the batteries. We are using Duracell and getting a decent battery life from them, but rechargeable ones would be so much easier (and cheaper) to use. The memory cards are pretty cheap, so it’s worth getting one to avoid losing photos when the batteries go.
I wouldn’t get one of these for an older child who could be trusted to look after a proper camera, but for a pre-schooler (especially one with younger siblings), it is just the job.

This awesome starfighter is the very first to be modelled on a video game. This is an absolute must for all those darkside lovers out there, coming with a cannon, two flick missile launchers and three exclusive mini figures including: Darth Vader (battle damaged), Juno Eclipse and Darth Vader’s apprentice. This set takes roughly 2 hours to build but is really worth it. Have fun exterminating Jedi.

Lego kick off their 2008 Star Wars series with a set from the Attack Of The Clones with kit #7670: Hailfire Droid and Spider Droid.
After the success of last years Clone Trooper and Battle Droid battle packs it’s nice to see Lego continuing with new larger troop building box sets.
The set is an instant droid army and has 4 mini figures. There are two standard Battle Droids, like the ones from 2007’s Trade Federation M.T.T., which have the arm with the upright grip and one Battle Droid Commander with a yellow body. Each one is armed with a blaster rifle. There is also a dark grey Super Battle Droid as well.
The next droid is the Spider Droid. A vastly improved and updated version from the previous release in 2005’s Wookie Attack, it has more poseable legs, moveable antenna, movable forward cannon and moving eye scanners. It has a foot base of 7.5 sqcm, is 11.5cm from leg to cannon tip and stands 8.5 cm high to tip of antenna.
The kit is finished off with a Corporate Alliance Hailfire Droid. These antiaircraft weapon platforms have two upper mounted missile racks for dealing with enemy ships. The model has angled wheels with brown tread tracks (works best on carpeted floors!) and movable missile pods on each side. Each pod holds 4 red flick missiles. The droid measures 10 cm long, 13.5cm wide and 8cm tall.
The kit which is composed of 227 pieces, not including the figures and weapons and takes about 20 minutes to build. A excellent army builder and a must for all those Trade Federation fans out there. Lets hope Lego bring out a comparable Clone Trooper pack later in the year.

Lego kick off their 2008 Star Wars series with a set from the Expanded Universe range with kit #7667: Imperial Dropship.
After the success of last years Clone Trooper and Battle Droid battle packs it’s nice to see Lego continuing with more troop building box sets.
The Imperial Dropship is a small planet skimming craft with a cockpit for a pilot, wing mounted cannons and a deployable troop platform to the rear. The cockpit hinges open and closed and the rear tail and thruster assembly pivots up to allow the troop platform to detach.
You get one Shadow Trooper pilot (previously only available in 2007’s TIE Crawler) and 3 Stormtroopers. Two blaster rifles and 2 heavy assault rifles finish the set.
The kit is composed of 60 pieces, not including the figures and weapons and measures 11cm long, 6cm wide and 7.5cm high at rear.
It takes about 5 minutes to build, there are 3 decals to apply and it’s ready to go. A nice little kit and definitely one for all those army builders out there.

I purchased this for my daughter’s fifth birthday having been put off the interactive WALL-E which is very flimsy and I would highly recommend it to other parents thinking of buying it, the transforming controls are a little stiff the first couple of times but after a couple of hours my daughter was opening him up and putting him back to ’sleep’ fairly easily.
He is very durable having been bounced around the floor alot and played with constantly, also he’s adorable!

It’s really good how they manage to make him shut up into his little box, and at the push of a button he appears again.
My daughter won’t go anywhere without him, which is fine as he’s not too large to carry around.

My 4 year old son borrowed a Omnitrix FX from a friend for a couple of weeks and played with it non-stop, had so much imaginative play with it that when I saw this one reduced to £12 I knew it would be well worth the money.
The deluxe one does seem to be much better quality than the F/x. It has a thick fabric strap that fastens with Velcro so fairly easy to put on and take off. It is a big hunk of plastic but my son loves that about it. It has a black and white screen and various modes in which too play. this is where problems arose a little for my little boy who has not yet learnt to read. He cannot play in battle mode as this consists of a little animation of Ben running for a while and then at random times the watch makes a noise to alert you a villain has approached. Text then runs along under a picture of the villain instructing you which Alien you must turn the omnitrix too in order to win. It then times you while you turn the dial thro the aliens, choose the correct one and hit the watch. It then shows a little fight – not amazing graphics but the kids don’t care – and tell you whether you have won or lost.
Normal mode is a lot simpler – you turn the dial, select which alien you want to be and hit the watch, much like Ben10 himself. It makes all the right noises and then shows a few images of your chosen alien.
There is also status mode which shows how many battle you have won and lost and options which you can turn the sound off.
When we first got this, my little boy kept having to bring it too me has he had wandered into various modes and couldn’t get to where he wanted to be. I think for younger fans the FX is probably sufficient although the plastic strap is nowhere near as nice or comfortable looking and I think considering it doesn’t actually do anything other than make noises and flash light it ought to be substantially less expensive than the deluxe.
Now my son has had this a week or so he seems to have worked out how to navigate around it without being able to read what it says, and taking the closeness in price into account, I would have to recommend the deluxe Omnitrix over the Omnitrix F/X.

It’s a great toy and alot of fun for the price. The controls allow you to alter the speed of the main rotor to alter the lift, also the speed of the tail rotor to turn the helicopter. With judicious application of the stick on weights you can balance the model so that it drifts forward when in stable flight. It takes a bit of practice to get this thing to go in roughly the direction you want it too but that is half the fun.

My nephew bought me this as a Christmas gift & I haven’t stopped playing with it since! I found that it required a little more nose weight to give it forward momentum (Blue Tack sorted that out)but once I had added the extra nose weight it flew beautifully. As a former pilot I can tell you it’s flight characteristics are quite realistic & once you get the hang of the slight delay from the infra red transmitter the helicopter is very controllable. It is an indoor toy only as the infra red transmitter requires walls to bounce the ‘beam’ to the helicopter & as it’s made from styrofoam any light breeze would blow it away. Initially I broke a couple of tail rotors on our laminate floor but these are available in packs of 3 from Firebox.com quite cheaply – since then I’ve taken to flying it in carpeted areas of the house! Buy one, you certainly won’t be disappointed!

This remote controlled helicopter is fantastic fun. I got one for my birthday and have been playing with it since. My dad has a go everytime he pops over, so I guess I would say ‘fun for all ages’. Takes a while to get used to the controls, but once you do it is really good. Good value for money and despite having crashed it numerous times it is still going and working well.
